This Week in Theater I: 11/28 - 12/2

Monday, 11/28:  You'll have a sub today, but it's your LAST DAY to complete construction on your Superhero Costume pieces!  Don't slack off!

Tuesday, 11/29: COSTUME BUILD DAY!  You and your team will dress your assigned team member up in the costume you've created and Ms. Y will take a photo (for grading purposes).  You'll only have 25 minutes to put the costume on securely.

Wednesday, 11/30: Begin Radio Drama Unit.

Thursday, 12/1: Radio Drama Unit.

Friday, 12/2: Complete Radio Drama notes/review.  Improv Day!  (Come to the Improv Show at 7pm on 12/2 to see Ellison's CSI Improv Troupe perform!  It's free!)

This Week in Theater I: 11/14 - 11/18

Monday 11/14: Complete Superhero Scene presentations.  Introduce Costume Project.

Tuesday 11/15: Rendering* work. (Colored pencils and crayons only.)

Wednesday 11/16: Rendering* work.  (Colored pencils and crayons only.)

Thursday 11/17: Renderings* due at the end of class.  (Colored pencils and crayons only.)

Friday 11/18: "The Cask of Amontillado" presentation in auditorium by Theater III/IV.  (COSTUME PROJECT MATERIALS ARE DUE IN SHOEBOX LABELED WITH YOUR NAME ON MONDAY, 11/21.)

This Week in Theater I: 11/7-11/10

11/7: Brainstorm Superheroes/Villains for costume project

11/8: Scene Writing: With your partner(s), write a scene that showcases your hero/villain and their superpowers.  Make sure to give them action and dialogue!

11/9: Continue Scene Writing. Begin rendering.

11/10: Work on renderings.

11/11: No school.  Thank a veteran for their service!

PAPER TOWEL Costume Design

(20 points – “Semester Projects”)

Project: You and a partner (groups of  three need approval from me FIRST – you cannot work alone) will brainstorm, design, and create a “costume” for a superhero using the materials listed below! 

Deadlines:

            * Design due DAY THREE (-5 points for lateness)

            * Materials brought in by DAY THREE (-5 points for lateness)

* Creation day is DAY FIVE (if you or your partner is absent, creation day

is the first day both of you are in class together – WITHIN REASON)

Rubric:

Materials	Used standard materials, AND used unique materials with approval!	Used only standard materials.	Failed to use any standard materials.
Collaboration	Worked collaboratively with partner/group. Stayed on task at all times to design and create costume.	Worked with partner/group to create costume.  Argued or disagreed on multiple occasions and needed a “Ms. Y intervention.”	Did not work collaboratively.  One person (or a smaller group) did all the work.
Design	Used knowledge of past and present designs to draw a costume design.  Materials labeled. Colors used.  Design is neat and easy to understand.	Drew costume design.  Materials are not labeled, and/or colors are not used.  Design is difficult to understand.	No design drawn.

Primary Standard Materials:

2 rolls of white paper towels            1-2 rolls of masking tape            3-4 paper grocery bags

You MUST use these materials!  Your costume will be constructed mainly out of the above items.  Bring your materials in to class in a SHOEBOX WITH A LID (or similar) labeled with the names of your group members and you may leave them in my classroom.  If you do not bring them in a labeled box, you cannot leave them in my room.  Materials are due in class by Monday, November 15.

Unique materials:

            The sky’s the limit!  Just make sure you get any other materials APPROVED BY ME by DAY TWO. (See below.)

Examples of unique materials could include crayons, markers, rulers, glue, glitter, aluminum foil, plastic wrap, paper plates, duct tape, costume jewelry, balloons… you name it, it could work! 

Process:

Day One -___11/10__:                        Brainstorming/Begin Design Sketch

Day Two -__11/12__:                        Design Sketch (Draw, color, label, etc.)  Be creative!

Day Three -__11/15__:                      Design Sketch due (Draw, color, label, etc.)  Materials due today!

                                                (One design per group of two; two designs per group of three.)

Day Four -__11/16__:                        Build Day.

Day Five - ___11/17___:                        Creation Day – Build Costume!!!

3. What would you change about the project?

4. Anything else you'd like to get off your chest??? :-)

COSTUMES 101: Dressing the Part

 

COSTUME “NEED-TO-KNOW”

- Every garment worn in a production is a costume piece.
- Costumes are a storytelling tool.

- Costumes convey information about the character to the audience.

- What kind of information???

 

WHAT DO COSTUMERS DO?

And what’s the big deal about it, anyway?

 

COSTUMERS MUST…
1. Read the script!

2. Know the LOCATION (setting).

3. Know the TIME.

4. Know the ACTION in each scene.

 

RESEARCH!

-  After a designer reads the script, they meet with the director to discuss their plans.

- Then, they can begin to RESEARCH the costume design…

- How do you do RESEARCH for a project at school?
