All Theater Classes: Journals

Every student in Theater I, Theater II, and Theater III should bring a journal (a folder or notebook capable of holding three-hole punched papers that has a supply of lined notebook paper in it) to class EVERY DAY.

Every student in Theater I, Theater II, and Theater III should bring a writing utensil to class as well.  This is common sense, folks.  (Theater II and III should make sure that at least one of their writing utensils is a pencil.)

Notes from today:

Three types of stages and the stage areas...

A proscenium stage has an audience on ONE SIDE.

A thrust stage has an audience on THREE SIDES.

An arena stage (theater-in-the-round) has an audience on ALL SIDES, and is diagrammed like a compass (N, E, W, S, NE, SE, NW, SW, and C) or the face of a clock (digits 1 through 12 and C).

Homework for BOTH Theater II & III:

Listen to and observe 3 different people.  Describe what you see and hear in DETAIL.  DO NOT USE NAMES in your description.  DO NOT MAKE YOUR SUBJECT AWARE OF YOU.  Simply observe and describe.  (Theater II students place this assignment in your journal.  Theater III students will turn in your descriptions to Ms. Y tomorrow.)

Don't forget to see Ms. Yanchak if you missed the quiz on Thursday.  You will not be given class time to make it up; you will need to schedule a before/after school time or come in during lunch.

What challenges has your group faced so far in the Primitive Theater Project?  How have you resolved any arguments or disagreements?

Theater I: Journal Entries

We have had 3 journal entries so far in class.  Our first journal check is TODAY, Thursday, September 10.

Journals must be formatted with the entry number, the journal title, and the date.

Journals must be kept in a binder, portfolio folder, or notebook that is marked clearly with your name, class period, and Theater I.

Any "loose paper" journals will receive a zero for this check.

Here's the list of journal entries thus far:

1. Fair Choice: How did your group make decisions and choices regarding the tableaus your performed?  Were there any difficulties?  Did someone "take the lead?"  Who?
2. Warm-Ups: Make a chart of the warm-ups we've learned so far in class.  List the titles of warm-ups on one side (Rag Doll, Stordahlen, Pass the Clap, etc.).  List the goals that each achieves (relaxation, memory, energy building, etc.) on the other.
3. Directions: Think about something that you are an EXPERT at doing -- tying your shoe, making a sandwich... something simple.  Write directions on HOW TO DO that thing using at least 7 steps.  Make sure your directions are simple enough for anyone to understand.

First Week of School!

Hi all Theater students!

Thanks for surviving the first day without me, and for being such a welcoming group upon my return!

Here's the NEED-TO-KNOW for this week:

1. Theater I & II students are required to bring in their JOURNALS by Monday, August 31.  You'll be using this journal every day in class.  It should be a portfolio folder with the capability to hold 3-hole punched paper, marked clearly with your NAME, your CLASS PERIOD, and THEATRE.  Please make sure to supply it with some notebook paper!

2. ALL Theater students are required to have their Classroom Management Plan signature pages signed and dated by a parent/guardian, and return them to me by Monday, August 31.  Please don't forget!
